Watch out for the “Flying Birds!”
Pause and Reflect: What occupies your mind the most? Is there something else you wish would occupy your mind? How do you stop destructive thoughts from taking root in your life?
Scripture: “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” Proverbs 4:23
Scriptural Insights: There is a saying I heard years ago that went like this, “You can’t keep the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from nesting there.” How do we guard our hearts? By tending to what we allow to nest in our minds. Why must we guard our hearts? Because it is the well by which we draw our actions, our words, and our values and beliefs from. The more you allow a thought to nest in your mind, the more this thought turns into a belief that begins to direct your heart and eventually your life choices.
What is the tool we have to combat and keep these thoughts from nesting in our minds and eventually in our hearts? 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.” In other words, you must guard your thoughts and also examine them making sure they line up with what is true, which is God’s truth, His word.
