Harvest Time

Pause and Reflect: Recall a time when you experienced the joy of a highly anticipated harvest: a type of food, a type of fruit, or perhaps a favorite vegetable. What is it about this particular food to be harvested that brings you joy? What is it you hope to harvest in your heart this fall?

Scripture: “Jesus traveled through all the towns and villages of that area, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were confused and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He said to his disciples, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” Matthew 9:35-38 NLT

Scriptural Insights: I have been a certified CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) instructor for the past several years. One of the most important principles I teach is to instruct the first responder, the first person getting ready to perform CPR, to designate a person to call 911. This may seem silly to some, as we may automatically assume that someone has or will call, but an assumption can be wrong. So, to ensure the emergency medical system has been activated, the first responder must designate who is to make the 911 call. This is a vital step in this life saving process.

If you are in Christ, you have been called to fulfill the great commission:

“Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 NLT

You are part of the rescue team that Christ is sending to take part in the great harvest of souls. So, let us not assume someone else is responding. We are all “called” by Jesus himself to respond. Let this harvest of souls waiting to respond to the Gospel fill you with joy as you go forth and respond to His call.
